A simple guide for homeowners in Round Rock and the Austin area
Small wall damage is normal. Nail holes, picture hanger marks, and minor dents show up over time—especially in homes with kids. The good news is most of these fixes are simple if you have the right materials and a clear process.
At Rock Hill Painting, every customer gets a free touch-up kit after their project is complete. It’s designed so you can handle these small repairs yourself without guessing or buying extra supplies.
If you’ve worked with Rock Hill Painting, you already have this in your touch-up kit:
Spare matching paint
Drywall spackle
Small roller and tray
Sanding block
Plastic putty knife
Small brush
If not, these are the exact items you want to gather before starting.
Start clean. Wipe the wall around the hole or dent so dust and oils don’t interfere with the repair.
If the drywall is raised or rough around the damage, lightly sand it flat before applying anything.
Use the putty knife to press a small amount of spackle into the hole.
Keep it tight and smooth. The goal is to fill the hole flush with the wall, not leave a mound on top. For small nail holes, one pass is usually enough. For slightly larger dents, you may need a second coat after the first dries.
Let it dry fully. Dry time depends on the product, but most light spackle is ready within 30–60 minutes.
Once dry, use the sanding block to level the patch.
You should not feel the repair when you run your hand over it. If you do, keep sanding lightly until it blends into the wall.
Wipe away dust before moving on.
This is where most DIY repairs go wrong.
Use your matching paint and apply it lightly:
For small spots: use the brush
For slightly larger areas: use the small roller
Do not overload the paint. Light coats blend better than heavy ones. If needed, apply a second coat after the first dries.
Fresh paint can look slightly different at first. Give it time to dry completely. In most cases, it will blend in once cured.
If the wall has heavy texture, use a light dabbing motion with the brush or roller to match it.
Applying too much spackle is the most common issue. It creates extra sanding and makes the patch more visible.
Skipping sanding is another problem. Even small bumps will show through paint.
Using the wrong paint is the biggest one. Without the exact match, the repair will stand out no matter how well it’s done.
Most homeowners don’t fix small wall damage because they don’t have the materials on hand. That’s why Rock Hill Painting leaves a free touch-up kit after every job.
It removes friction. You already have the exact paint, the right tools, and a simple way to keep your home looking clean over time.
If the damage is larger than a few inches, involves cracks that keep coming back, or includes water damage, it’s better to bring in a professional. Those issues usually need more than a simple patch.
If you want clean, durable results from the start—and a system to maintain your walls after—we handle interior painting and drywall repairs across Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and nearby areas.
