Is Sherwin-Williams Symmetry good paint?

When Sherwin-Williams released Emerald® Symmetry™ Interior Acrylic, we were interested in seeing how it would actually perform on a real residential repaint. After using it on a recent interior painting project for new homeowners in the North Austin area, we came away impressed.

For this project, we painted over existing gray walls with Sherwin-Williams Taupe of the Morning SW 9590, a warmer neutral that helped completely change the feel of the home.

Our Experience With Sherwin-Williams Emerald Symmetry

The first thing that stood out was the coverage.

Changing from gray to a warmer color can sometimes expose weaknesses in a paint's hiding ability, especially when you're trying to produce an even, consistent finish across an entire home. Emerald Symmetry covered extremely well and gave us the clean finish we were looking for.

Sherwin-Williams describes Emerald Symmetry as having exceptional hide and durability, and our experience with the product backed up the coverage claim.

From a painter's perspective, it was also simply clean and easy to work with. Application went smoothly and the finished walls had the quality we expect when we're using a premium interior coating.

Practically No Paint Smell During the Project

One of the biggest things we noticed was the lack of noticeable paint odor.

Anyone who has had several rooms—or an entire house—painted knows that traditional paint smell can become one of the less enjoyable parts of the project. With Emerald Symmetry, we noticed essentially no paint smell while working with it.

That makes sense given how the product is formulated. Sherwin-Williams lists Emerald Symmetry as a zero-VOC paint that is GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions.

For homeowners who are moving into a house, living in the home while it's being painted, or simply don't want their house smelling like fresh paint for days, that's a significant advantage.

Taupe of the Morning Was a Great Update From Gray

The homeowners chose Sherwin-Williams Taupe of the Morning SW 9590 to replace the existing gray.

It was a good example of what we're seeing with interior color trends around Austin. Many homeowners still want a neutral home, but they're moving away from the cooler grays that dominated interiors for years.

Taupe of the Morning keeps the home neutral while introducing more warmth.

Instead of completely changing the style of the house, the new color made the interior feel warmer, fresher and more current.

Based on our first experience with it, yes—especially when finish quality is a priority.

Ultimately, the paint is only one part of a good interior repaint. Proper preparation, clean lines, protection of the home and careful application matter just as much.

On this project, everything came together.

The gray walls were transformed with Taupe of the Morning, Emerald Symmetry performed extremely well, and the homeowners were happy enough with the finished project to leave us a five-star review.
